It’s fair to say that everyone roots for movies to succeed. Broadly speaking, we’d rather see a million critically acclaimed blockbusters and indie hits light up cineplexes rather than sit through countless godawful sequels and inexcusably boring, cheap January horrors. This fact may seem obvious but it really does need to be reiterated before a list like this.

Yes, it may only be early May, but even with the cinemas shut up worldwide we’ve nonetheless already encountered over a dozen terrible flicks this year so far. And we were really rooting for 2020!

Everyone wanted the new decade to usher in a flood of instant classic flicks, and no one was hoping to get more excited for new franchises and original stories than us. But it is our job to warn you, dear reader, which duds it is in your best interest to avoid, and in that spirit we’ve compiled this fifteen-strong mega list of 2020’s worst offerings (so far—remember, the multiplexes may be out of commission for now, but Netflix is still going strong and the year is young).

14. Downhill

Searchlight Pictures

If there’s one thing we can say for this unnecessary remake of Swedish/French 2014 co-production Force Majeure, it’s that it didn’t blunt the cold, mean-spirited edge of the original film’s dark comedy. Yes, Downhill manages to avoid the pitfall suffered by other American revisions of foreign comedy classics, such as the woeful Dinner for Schmucks, by holding on to all the original’s darkness and unsparingly vicious worldview.

The only problem is, despite hiring Julia Louis Dreyfuss and Will Ferrell to play the feuding couple whose marriage falls apart after he abandons her and grabs his phone when faced with a potential avalanche, the film forgot to ever be funny. As such, audiences were left with a sour, nasty flick which didn’t know what tone it was even attempting.
