15 Awesome Films Since 2000 You'll Never Watch Again

3. United 93

Michael Fassbender Shame
Universal Pictures

Plot:

A real-time account of United Airlines Flight 93, which was the only plane hijacked on September 11 2001 not to reach its target.

Why It's Awesome:

A sensitive, beautifully directed and deeply respectful account of the doomed flight, this is easily the best 9/11 movie to date.

Why You'll Only Watch It Once:

There haven't been many 9/11 films and for good reason. Even now, nearly 20 years later, it's still too sensitive. United 93, with its documentary-like style, cast of unknown actors and real-time, dialogue-light screenplay, is a chillingly realistic film that puts the viewers right in the center of the day's events, which is just as harrowing as it sounds.

It's a movie that's hard to watch on two levels. Firstly, it's exceptionally intense thanks to the documentary style and secondly, it shows a heart-breaking loss of life. Before the film starts we already know that none of these brave passengers who tried to save the plane survived, so it's a film many would struggle to even make themselves watch once, let alone twice.

It's also not a film anyone will feel the need to watch again. Given how stripped-down it is there would be little to discover in another viewing and it's the kind of film that will linger with you for a long, long time.
