15 Awesome Films Since 2000 You'll Never Watch Again

9. The Revenant

Michael Fassbender Shame
20th Century Fox

Plot:

After being mauled and left for dead by a companion, Leonardo DiCaprio's fur trapper goes through a excruciating journey of pain and vengeance through an unforgiving wilderness.

Why It's Awesome:

Leonardo DiCaprio's amazing lead performance and the unforgettable cinematography make this a memorably visceral, intense and harrowing survival movie.

Why You'll Only Watch It Once:

This movie is essentially pain-porn. Nearly the entire thing is Leonardo DiCaprio struggling through a bleak, harsh wilderness in unrelenting agony and thanks to both his incredible performance and the film's realistic, long-take cinematography, you'll feel every bit of his pain. Not only is all this disturbing and painful, but it's also downright exhausting and spreads across two and a half hours.

The Revenant is also another enormously depressing film, with plenty of death, misery and bereavement throughout the movie. DiCaprio's character is also dealing with the murder of his son, as if the film wasn't already downcast enough. Towards the end, a traumatized Leo whispers "I ain't afraid to die anymore... I done it already."

This perfectly sums up the draining experience of the Revenant. As well as this, the film has a frustrating cliff-hanger ending which will often deter viewers from watching a film again.
