13. Lady Macbeth

The Plot: Based on Nikolai Leskov's novel about a young woman, Katherine (Florence Pugh), who begins rebelling against the dispassionate, loveless life set out for her in savagely unpredictable ways.

Why It's Awesome: If you assumed this was going to be yet another stuffy period drama that drew excessive praise from the press, think again.

Lady Macbeth is a deliciously twisted slow-burn psychological thriller bolstered by an impeccable central performance from Florence Pugh, who crucially underplays the part for maximum eeriness.

It's tough to believe that this is the feature debut of director William Oldroyd, because he makes so many strong choices across the board, evoking an almost Kubrickian vibe with the chilly unease he creates.

Intense, sexy and very, very screwed up, Lady Macbeth is a cult classic in the making.
