11. The Big Sick

The Plot: When his ex-girlfriend Emily (Zoe Kazan) is taken ill and placed in a medically induced coma, Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani) is forced to interact with her parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter), in turn examining their major cultural differences.

Why It's Awesome: A thoroughly entertaining subversion of typical indie rom-coms and weepie dramas, The Big Sick makes a bonafide star out of writer-actor Nanjiani in this incredibly charming and wonderfully human movie about the differences and similarities between people from different backgrounds.

Holly Hunter's arguably Oscar-worthy performance is an utter delight, and though the two-hour run-time might sound a little much for material like this, the cast carries it superbly. Also, it's got one Hell of a 9/11 joke you don't want to miss.
