4. Ava Starr - Ant-Man And The Wasp

 The Avengers Loki
Marvel Studios

Although she doesn’t have a lot of screen time, Hannah John-Kamen brings an incredibly difficult role to life with her version of Ava Starr.

Put it this way; Ava’s powers make her almost impossible to play. Imagine trying to play someone who is permanently being molecularly being reassembled, without looking like you’re doing a bad version of the Thriller dance. Or attempting to convey that someone is continually in excruciating pain without just looking in pain all the time. Sounds difficult, right? Well, that doesn’t even factor in the characterisation of the complex character herself.

One final layer of difficulty is added in when you remember the comic version of her character was a man with an entirely different origin and motivations, so she didn’t even have reference material to work off.

John-Kamen may not be in the Ant-Man and the Wasp film for huge portions of time, but when she is it’s remarkable to see how well a truly challenging character has been portrayed.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
