15 Best Action Movies Of The Last 10 Years

1. Mad Max: Fury Road

No one in their wildest dreams could have thought that this would go so well. Remaking a popular but largely forgotten ‘80s cult affair did not seem the way to gain critical regard or big box office bucks. As it turned out, George Miller’s reboot of his own series turned into one of the best regarded films of the past decade.

A grimy, gory post-apocalyptic road movie, the latest Mad Max brings new meaning to the phrase “high octane”. After setting out its stall, with Max captured by one of several warring tribes, the pace doesn’t let off for a moment. It’s all gears and guts, furious forward motion, desolate, war torn landscapes and lurid but believable violence.

Bolstered by intense performances by Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, Mad Max: Fury Road was that rarest of things, a film that gleefully embraced the big, brash daftness at its core while still striving to be as good as it possibly could.

It’s an action movie with genuine artistic merit and ambition (particularly in the gorgeous monochrome rerelease). Miller and co managed not just to exceed expectations, but to come out with a masterpiece.
