5. Father's Day (Creepshow, 1982)

"Where's my cake, Bedelia?!"

The wealthy Granthams gather on the anniversary of their Uncle Nathan's passing. Awaiting the arrival of Nathan's daughter, Bedelia, they recount the events leading up to his death. Incessantly demanding that Bedelia brings him his Father's Day cake, his tirade caused her to snap - she hit him over the head with a marble ashtray, declaring "Happy Father's Day!" On the way to the family's reunion, Bedelia takes a detour to visit the grave, whiskey in hand. While she vents in a drunken rage at the headstone, Nathan's rotting corpse claws its way out of the earth, intent on getting the Father's Day cake he was denied.

Father's Day is the vignette that best represents the feel of Creepshow as a whole, and it establishes the perfect tone going forward. Its balance of black humour and horror is on point, and the graphic novel style is put to better use here than in any of the stories that follow. The flashback scenes, in particular, are beautifully edited. That being said, every minute of Creepshow is an absolute delight, and any one of its five segments could've justifiably featured in this run-down. The 2019 TV revival is also well worth a look-in, too; its admittedly a mixed bag, but Creepshow does lend itself perfectly to the update.

Olivia Bradbury hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
