15 Best Dark Fantasy Movies Of All Time

14. The Crow (1994)

A Monster Calls
Miramax

The Crow is one of the most underappreciated dark fantasy films in recent memory. Released in 1994 it has become somewhat forgotten among the great action films of its time, and many audiences seem to dismiss its status as a dark superhero film.

Directed by Alex Proyas, and based on the comic book series, the film focuses on protagonist Eric Draven, a rock star who is reanimated as an undead avenger who swears to hunt down and kill the man who murdered both him and his lover.

The Crow has great action sequences and clear Gothic set design evoking everything dark fantasy. However, the film is most memorable for its onset tragedy.

While filming, lead actor, Brandon Lee, was accidentally shot by faulty blank ammunition and rushed to hospital where he ultimately died during surgery. The film only had a week left of production, and Proyas delicately finished the remaining scenes with a mixture of special effects and stunt doubles.

The Crow has an impressive 83% on Rotten Tomatoes but only earned $51 million at the worldwide box office. Over the years many have attempted to spark a franchise out of The Crow but nothing substantial has ever materialised, and therefore the original film has remained a cult classic among the dark fantasy sub-genre.
