15 Best Dark Fantasy Movies Of All Time

9. Coraline (2009)

Much like Corpse Bride, Coraline (2009) is a much loved stop-motion horror fantasy film. Directed by Henry Selick, of The Nightmare Before Christmas fame, and based on the Neil Gaiman novel, Coraline is a creepy but mesmerising adventure.

The film focuses on young girl Coraline who discovers a mysterious door in her new home, only to discover it leads to a parallel world full of danger and nightmares. A film with Coraline's ambition could certainly only be fulfilled through the use of animation. The creatures are both terrifying and expertly crafted while the atmosphere of both worlds are unnerving.

Coraline is one of the more haunting children's animations, but one that also teaches a valuable lesson. Much like stories within the dark fantasy sub-genre, Coraline makes a young, struggling child confront her fears - a theme that you may have noticed throughout this article.

Coraline has an impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed and an admirable $126 million at the worldwide box office, making it the third highest grossing stop-motion feature of all time.
