15 Best Dark Fantasy Movies Of All Time

7. Beetlejuice (1988)

A Monster Calls
Warner Bros.

That little-known director Tim Burton keeps popping up on this list, and rightly so. However, this time he has replaced his best friend Johnny Depp with the one and only Michael Keaton. Released in 1988, Beetlejuice is one of the more wackiest and outlandish films on this list.

In similar vain to Army of Darkness, Beetlejuice is more of a haunted house ghost comedy than a horror filled with great creatures, but that does not stop the supernatural elements of a dark fantasy film to flourish.

In a nutshell, the film revolves around a dead couple who now haunt their former home alongside a mischievous poltergeist who goes by the name Beetlejuice. Together they all try to frighten the new owners of their home through various absurd and somewhat comical means.

Beetlejuice has propelled itself to classic '80s pop culture status and the iconic black and white suit worn by Keaton has become a fan-favourite Halloween costume.

The film has an 85% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, grossed a good $75 million at the worldwide box office, and even earned an Academy Award for best makeup.
