15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2017
13. The Devil’s Candy
After delighting us with his prom night from hell horror The Loved Ones back in 2009, Aussie director Sean Byrne finally gave us his long-awaited follow-up The Devil’s Candy which although first screened in 2015 was stuck in limbo until horror specialists IFC Midnight released in (albeit on a pretty limited run) in early 2017.
Normally a delayed release is a sure-fire sign that a film is a stinker but we’re happy to report that Byrne’s sophomore movie bucks that trend. Described as a ‘heavy metal horror’, it stars Ethan Embry as a struggling artist and metalhead who moves into a house with a murky past with his wife and daughter and soon enough starts hearing voices that compel him to start creating some rather disturbing art.
Mixing a number of horror subgenres including haunted house, home invasion, serial killer and satanic possession and dishing out more than enough thrills and gore (though not as much gore as The Loved Ones), it’s a hidden horror gem that’s a must-see for genre fans.
