3. Journeyman

He's not the most prolific filmmaker around, but Paddy Considine is one of the most fascinating actors and directors working today. His turn in Dead Man's Shoes gave audiences a contender for performance of the decade, while his directorial debut, Tyrannosaur, traumatised everyone who watched it.

Journeyman isn't quite as bleak as that drama, but his long-awaited follow up about an aged boxer whose last fight costs him most of his cognitive functions has the same raw emotional storytelling that's defined all of his work so far.

You could argue that it's potentially a bit of a vanity project, but the real standout star is current Doctor Who lead Jodi Whittaker, as the wife who tries to reconcile the man she married with who he becomes after his final fight.

It's grim and unappealing but it's not nihilistic; there's optimism to be found in the darkness, and it culminates in a real triumph of the human spirit.
