15 Best Hidden Gem Movies Of 2018

Netflix

Veronica was a victim of its own hype. Before it released, the Netflix film went viral with claims that it was going to be the "Scariest film of all time!" and "The best horror movie since The Exorcist!", two overused phrases that usually condemn a release to being forgotten about two weeks after it comes out. Fortunately, Veronica has more lasting power than that, but those wild expectations certainly set it up for a fall.

On the surface, Netflix's horror doesn't sound like it's doing much new, either. A girl gets possessed after messing about with a Ouija board, her family is tormented by a shadowy poltergeist and creepy nuns give vague advice from the sidelines. While the narrative ingredients are a little overdone though, director Paco Plaza plays around with them like they aren't.

Most importantly, Veronica is simply great at crafting suspenseful, brilliantly structured scares. It's not just loud noises and crashes off-screen, but properly tense moments, where you're not sure if you saw what you think you saw, that give the film its lasting power. It helps that everything is happening to characters you actually care about as well, which only makes that climax even more devastating.
