2. ParaNorman

Few films radiate such pure love for horror as ParaNorman. Animation house Laika had previously made the also-admirable Coraline, but it was on this 2012 film that they really came into their own with this tale of a zombie-obsessed schoolboy misfit who just so happens to talk to the dead.

When Norman's long-lost, seemingly mad uncle shows up and charges his nephew with a mission of profound importance, then promptly drops dead, the young greenhorn naturally has no idea what he's supposed to do - and a rookie mistake promptly leads to several troubled souls rising from the grave as zombies. Norman and his friends must battle to get away and keep their town safe - but as our young hero digs deeper into his town's shady past, he realises things may not what they seem.

With its central message of acceptance and the importance of finding peaceful solutions to grievances rather than violence and bigotry, ParaNorman is certainly a timely film. It also proved a ground-breaker thanks to the casual inclusion of an openly gay character, which resulted in it becoming the first ever PG-rated film to get a GLAAD Media Award nomination.

But first and foremost, ParaNorman is terrific entertainment, and surely the only truly family-friendly zombie movie you're liable to find at present. Show this to the young 'uns, and they'll be begging you to let them watch some Romero and Fulci movies in no time.
