15 Best Movie Performances Of 2018 (So Far)
1. Toni Collette (Hereditary)
Though the Academy doesn't have a great history with horror movies, the Oscar success of Get Out earlier this year proves they're not totally against it when the material calls for it.
Ari Aster's haunting horror film is most certainly an Oscar-worthy effort across the board, but no snub would sting more than Toni Collette missing out on a Best Actress nomination (if not the win outright, to be honest).
As a grieving daughter attempting to keep her family close after a frightening supernatural presence enters their lives, Collette gives a performance for the ages. Fleeting between frayed subtlety, intense familial squabbling and the more overt supernatural shenanigans of the third act, it's an absolutely fearless performance that grabs firm control of an already transfixing, unforgettable movie.
She probably won't win Best Actress, especially with half the year still to go, but she'd be totally deserving of the little gold guy regardless.
