6. Red State
Kevin Smith's darkest film is a not so subtle analogy for the highly controversial Westboro Baptist Church.
After three sexually repressed teenagers think they've found a woman on the edge of town that is willing to sleep with them, they discover they were lured into a trap by the Five Points Trinity Church, a fundamentalist Christian cult.
Michael Parks is sensational as the church's leader Abin Cooper, who in his first appearance gives a sermon to his congregation which perfectly illustrates everything they believe in, from their hatred of homosexuals to their anticipation of Judgement Day.
Parks nails the kind of unhinged sadism that shows that he truly believes what he's saying no matter how crazy it comes across.
With strong supporting work from Mellissa Leo and John Goodman, Red State feels like an impassioned criticism of the worst that humanity has to offer in today's society.
It may feel a little too grungy and on the nose at times, but Parks and the dialogue he is given feels authentic as the darkest a person can possibly be.
