7. Blow

George Jung, known within the American crime scene as "Boston George", was finally released from prison during the summer of this year, having spent almost twenty years behind bars for leading the importation and smuggling of cocaine on a staggeringly huge scale during the 1970's and 80's. Blow is his story. Medellin Cartel were responsible for the vast majority of coke that made its way into the United States, and Jung was a prominent player within the criminal group. Johnny Depp plays Jung, and does a good job in a role that demands a strong performance. The voluptuous Penelope Cruz also does great work as Jung's wife Mirtha, and as the film ebbs on we see the life of crime that Jung has lived beginning to drive an immovable wedge between them. The film is also underlined by a tragic irony. Director Ted Demme suffering a fatal heart attack in 2002, which the coroner related to cocaine use. He produced a documentary entitled A Decade Under the Influence in 2003, but Blow proved to be his last Hollywood feature film.
