14. Dick Johnson Is Dead
Directed by Kirsten Johnson, son of the titular Dick and camera operator for the acclaimed Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour, this alternately poignant and hilarious documentary takes a stellar conceit and milks the idea for all its worth throughout its runtime.
After her father is diagnosed with dementia, the retiree gamely acquiesces to his documentarian daughter's request that she be allowed to direct his death. A great many of his deaths, in fact, as Johnson soon has her father enact various fictitious demises on camera to help her come to terms with her impending loss.
What this experiment leads to is a moving, funny, and frank discussion of death, grieving, coping, and loss as Johnson's attempts at artistic therapy reach the core of what makes us feel and how we impact one another's lives in both life and death.
