15 Best Original Movie Characters Of 2016
3. Manny - Swiss Army Man
Of all the characters on this list, Manny is by far the most unique. A corpse washed up on a deserted island, Manny is discovered by the stranded and depressed Hank, who uses him to find his way back to civilization. He's a human multi-tool: Karate chopping logs, blasting animals for hunting, and farting like a jet-ski along the California coast.
Much of Swiss Army Man consists of Hank and Manny talking to each other about life. Manny doesn't remember anything about humanity (he has even forgotten the Jurassic Park theme). As Hank educates him on what it means to be human, Manny's innocent questions make the audience question many of our own assumptions about being human. It is ultimately an existential love story between two individuals disconnected from society.
All of this is conveyed through an incredible physical performance by Daniel Radcliffe, who commits to this idiosyncratic character with admirable abandon. He sells every beat of this character - from extremely crude physical comedy to unexpectedly touching moments of pathos. Over the course of the film, Manny feels both alive and dead at the same time, which makes his presence impossible to forget.
