15 Best Performances In MCU Movies (So Far)
4. Chris Hemsworth - Thor
Hemsworth’s greatest strength is his versatility. While he’s often utilised for his comic relief - and it’s worth noting that the actor’s combination of looks and comic chops is really unfair - he can do the serious stuff just as well.
His arc in Endgame is one of the Avengers movies’ most affecting. Thor breaks down, crippled by self doubt the likes of which you could never imagine striking a literal God. Hemsworth sells the turmoil perfectly, making you believe that even someone with the power and general aura of Thor could suffer such self doubt. When he finally shakes off his fear and gets back to business, it’s inspiring.
Still, it’s the comedy work that makes him so great. The Marvel films’ greatest failings tend to be when they take themselves too seriously. Thor - especially in the capable hands of Taika Waititi - never fall into this trap. They’re looser and funnier, with Hemsworth never failing to sell Thor’s fish out of water schtick.
From the off, he turns a character who could be boring and indestructible into a warm, hilarious, and genuinely vulnerable creation.
