15. RoboCop Is Another Pointless Remake That Flopped

Pointless remakes are a dime a dozen these days, but people got really up in arms when filmmakers decided they'd start remaking classic action films from the late-80s Paul Verhoeven Golden Era of Action. The 2012 Colin Farrell-starring Total Recall remake flopped critically and commercially, and the same was ultimately true of this competently-directed but completely needless reboot of the classic Peter Weller-starring action flick. This is a remake that surrendered pretty much every problem with remakes of classic action films: it was rated PG-13 instead of R, so there's none of the original's incredible gore effects, the satire was toned way down and nowhere near as clever, and despite a great cast, they were all wasted on bland characters. Though this movie might have made the fanboys whine incessantly, it's one instance where they were totally justified: the message to studios is simple, to stop rehashing classics and hoping to make an easy buck.
