11. Inherent Vice...Or Incoherent Vice?
Paul Thomas Anderson's long-awaited adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel opened to some of the year's most divisive reviews, with some critics hailing it as the sort of singular masterpiece only PTA was capable of making, while others dismissed it as self-indulgent, overlong, and much ado about nothing. Even those who praised the film struggled to argue against the fact that it was, with its meandering narrative, a challenge to follow, leading to it earning the popular moniker of "Incoherent Vice". Though it's hard to complain about the brilliant acting, witty script or sharp direction, does the whole amount to the sum of its parts? It's safe to say that those who enjoy straight-forward A-to-B-to-C narratives may well struggle with Anderson's unapologetically deliberate approach here, even if its unfussed pace and twisty narrative seems appropriate given the haze of weed smoke that the entire story takes place in.
