9. Gone Girl Makes Couples Reconsider Their Relationships
While there was plenty of discussion about whether or not Ben Affleck's genitalia makes its screen debut in this movie, the movie's real source of fervent debate is something else entirely. The author of Gone Girl's source material, Gillian Flynn, joked before the movie's release that it's the film that might "break up couples nationwide" and cause married couples to re-evalute their relationships. Labelled by many critics as "the worst date movie of all time", it's safe to say that the film's examination of the potential deceit, lost desire and social pressure that mold many marriages could cause some couples to reconsider what they've signed up for on the drive back home from the cinema. While the movie's narrative is, of course, inherently ridiculous, there is certainly some personal truth hidden beneath the absurd plot twists and outrageous social satire, that even someone as close to you as your spouse can harbour deep, dark secrets and be far from the person you thought you married. If you caught the movie at the cinema, there's a good chance you saw couples vociferously arguing about the movie on the way back to their cars, and one can only imagine that David Fincher would be maniacally grinning at the sight.
