The Film:

David Lynch's masterpiece, this is a nightmarish story of the darkness within seemingly normal suburbia. You'll never look at oxygen masks the same way again.

Controversy:

This is a seriously nasty and depraved film, so it upset a lot of people. All the sexual violence, sadism and crude lobotomies will make even the hardest viewer a bit queasy.

Why It Was Right:

Blue Velvet is the most terrifying film in the history of cinema. That's a big statement, but as anyone who has watched the film will know, it is justified.

Every single thing in Blue Velvet is harrowing and brutal. Every shot is unsettling, every scene of violence is nightmarish, every scene is unnerving and every element of the film adds up to the most devastating and horrific portrayal of something rotten within normal society ever. The most famous scene is the horrific oxygen mask scene, but frankly the film is endlessly disturbing from beginning to end.

If this hadn't caused controversy, that would've been inexplicable and if released now, it would terrify audiences just as much. There is something so unbearably nasty about this that it will have you sucking your thumb.

Full of depraved violence, nastiness and terror, this is another film which fully exceeds the hype and makes for another one of cinema's best realized nightmares.
