Prediction: The long-awaited seventh entry into the Star Wars franchise just might be the first to earn a Best Picture Oscar nomination ever since the original movie did back in 1978. Why It Just Might Happen: For starters, all signs point to Episode VII being a pretty great movie, what with a stellar cast, J.J. Abrams directing and a focus on practical effects rather than over-produced digital wizardry. Even if the story doesn't quite come together, though, if the movie strikes up enough nostalgia in audiences and awards voters, it could still end up making the 9 or 10 movies nominated for Best Picture. While sci-fi and Oscar don't exactly have a historic relationship, the sheer iconic appeal of this franchise might be enough to send it over the top if the movie is even half-way good. After all, the Academy has nominated poorly-reviewed films for Best Picture before (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, anyone?).
