Even big fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1985 action vehicle Commando like to believe that they're laughing at the film rather than with it, but to be clear, this is not some so-bad-it's-good disasterpiece akin to Tommy Wiseau's The Room.

Commando is an awesome movie that's completely aware of how awesome it is.

Viewing the movie today, it is impossible to accept that it's anything less than an entirely self-aware satire of action movies from the period.

It is inconceivable that the film's howlingly ridiculous plot, characters and one-liners ("Don't disturb my friend, he's dead tired") are anything but a heightened jab at the cartoonish silliness of star vehicle action flick tropes.

There's perhaps one moment where the film tips its hat to the audience a little too eagerly - as Arnold hurls grenades at his faceless fleet of enemies, the goons start backflipping through the air like they're in a Hot Shots movie - but otherwise Commando does a fantastic job playing itself just daft enough.

A surface glimpse might suggest that Commando is just a cheeseball action romp from Arnie's hot period, but it is clearly a much more switched-on film than it ever really gets credit for.
