5. Stranger By The Lake

Carol Rooney Mara Cate Blanchett
Les Films du Losange

Alain Guiraudie's Stranger By The Lake is what happens when queer cinema meets Hitchcockian suspense - erotic tension merges with a dark mystery, the end product being one of the most surprisingly effective and darkly humorous films in recent years.

Taking place entirely around the edges of a lake for nudists in the south of France, Stranger By The Lake unfolds at the kind of pace you'd expect for a film which includes a lot of sunbathing. At first leisurely, it becomes increasingly enigmatic as the protagonist witnesses a man drowning another man in the lake, but rather than reacting in fear, he becomes drawn towards the killer, aroused by the act he witnessed.

Winner of multiple awards, including the Queer Palm award at the Cannes Film Festival, Stranger By The Lake is a uniquely mesmerising thriller with a tight narrative and sexually explicit scenes which speak to the hidden dangers of unfettered lust.
