15 Essential Movies For LGBT* Pride Month
8. Show Me Love
Lukas Moodysson's hugely popular, multi-award winning directorial debut Show Me Love is a compassionate and sensitive examination of adolescent sexuality, following the blossoming lesbian relationship between two teenage girls, Agnes (Rebecka Liljeberg) and Erin (Alexandra Dahlström).
Despite their contrasting personalities (Erin is vivacious but listless while Agnes is quiet and reserved), the two girls form a bond after Erin prevents Agnes from attempting suicide, and a romance soon blossoms between them. Moodysson depicts their lives in a typically humdrum Swedish town in a way which speaks to the universality of the experiences of countless teenagers who feel lost as adulthood approaches, and the struggles faced by young gay people as they come out to wider society.
Released in the late 1990s, Show Me Love was a groundbreaking film for the LGBT* community, enhanced by the director's naturalistic approach to filmmaking which never falls into maudlin sentimentality, while refusing to gloss over the concerns of its protagonists.
