15 Film Adaptations Completely Different From The Book
6. The Wizard Of Oz
The Wizard of Oz's premise is pretty much the same as L. Frank Baum's book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. However, the classic musical would've been R-rated if it was an exact retelling.
While fighting the Wicked Witch's forces, Tin Man decapitated 40 wolves and the Scarecrows breaks the necks of 40 crows. Also, the Tin Man used to be a human but had his body parts replaced with tin after he chopped off his limbs with a cursed axe!
But those aren't the only changes. In the book, Dorothy has silver shoes, the Wicked Witch is a one-eyed dwarf, the Cowardly Lion looks like an actual lion, and the story doesn't have a cop-out ending where we learn "it was all a dream".
When Dorothy's gang meet the Wizard and ask him for a heart, a brain, and courage, he tells them that they already possess the qualities they desired. Unlike the movie, the group rejects this notion, forcing the Wizard to give them placebos. The Scarecrow gets "pins and needles" instead of brain, Tin Man gets a fake heart, and the Lion is given a drink that he thinks is "courage".
