Philip K. Dick's short story, The Minority Report, is set in a future where psychics called PreCogs use their visions to help the police stop crimes before they happen. When the PreCogs have a vision of a Precrime officers, John Anderton, killing a man called Leo, John goes on the run.

In the book, John is old and pudgy and basically looks like anti-Tom Cruise. The film explains the PreCogs gained their powers through experimental drugs. In the book, America had been in bombed in multiple wars, blanketing areas in radiation. Some children absorbed so much radiation, it mutated their DNA, allowing them to see into the future. Sadly, it also left them significantly brain-damaged and grotesquely deformed.

In the film, John refuses to kill his alleged victim. But in the book, John realises that not killing him will prove Precrime is flawed and so, shoots Leo dead.
