15 Films You Didn't Realise Were Based On Comic Books

4. The Old Guard

A History of Violence
Netflix

While working on Atomic Blonde (which is also based on a comic), Charlize Theron read a graphic novel called The Old Guard, which tells the tale of a group of immortals who safeguard the world. Believing the story could be adapted for Netflix, she got into contact with the writer, Greg Rucka.

Their first meeting... didn't go well. Rucka said discussing his work with Theron was was "one of the worst experiences of my career". When he was fired, Theron had her own production company pen the script, but Netflix rejected it on the grounds that it sucked.

Rucka was rehired and the film was released in 2020 and became one of the highest-streamed movies on Netflix ever. The adaptation is virtually identical to the first volume of the comic save for two factors. Quynh plays a fundamental part in the comics second volume but she's never mentioned in the first volume. Also, the side-story of Andromache losing her immortality was invented for the film.
