15 Films You Didn't Realise Were Remakes
13. Meet The Parents
The laugh-a-minute comedy, Meet the Parents, was one of the biggest hits of the millennium (as well as the most awkward.)
As hilarious as it was, it wasn't an original idea. It's based on a 1992 film of the same name. Greg Gilenna directed the film, wrote the script, and starred as the lead character, who's also called Greg.
In both films, Greg heads to the family house of his fiancée, Pam, to meet her parents for the first time. Due to a slew of misunderstandings and unfortunate accidents, the parents form a volatile relationship with their potential son-in-law. Both films have many of the same awkward scenes including Greg clogging the toilet, starting a fire, and being accused of drug-dealing.
However, the embarrassing moments are WAY worse in the original. Throughout the story, Greg wrecks the car, kills the dog, and indirectly encourages his fiancée's sister to take her own life!! What makes these situations more ridiculous is how reasonable the parents react to his antics. When Greg stabs Pam's mother in the eye with a hook, the father calmly brushes it off, claiming it was only an accident.
