10. Elysium
Neill Blomkamp's directorial debut, 2009's
District 9, was one of the biggest surprises of that year. Boasting a budget of only $30 million, the film became a critical and commercial success, even earning a Best Picture nomination. Sci-fi fans eagerly awaited his followup. Four years later, Blomkamp's sophomore outing,
Elysium, is ready to hit theaters. The film takes place in a future where the privileged live on the Elysium space station with any luxury they can ask for. All others live on the ruined remains of Earth. Max (Matt Damon) is one of those working class Joes who must get to Elysium after a life-threatening accident. Standing in his way are Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster) and her henchman Kruger (Sharlto Copley). One of the biggest elements of
District 9 was its social commentary. Blomkamp looks to be using sci-fi to address certain issues in today's society again with
Elysium. While the director is
aware that a $100 million Hollywood film is not the best way to raise concerns, he is trying to create a more interesting world that allows more substance than we're usually accustomed to seeing in an August flick. The first trailer was well-received and it will be exciting to see Damon back in action hero mode. Copley's villain could also be a treat to see on screen.
