7. Captain Phillips
Paul Greengrass helmed two of the best action movies in recent memory when he directed
The Bourne Supremacy and
The Bourne Ultimatum in the mid-to-late 2000s. After that, he stayed low-key and relatively quiet, with
Green Zone failing to leave an impact on critics or the box office. The filmmaker is hoping for a career resurgence this October when he tells the true story of Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), who was captain of the MV Maersk Alabama, which was hijacked by the Somali pirates in 2009, becoming the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in over two centuries. The subject matter certainly has the potential for compelling drama and Hanks is always reliable in a lead role. On paper, the film could be one of this year's Oscar contenders.
