15 Foreign Language Horror Movie Gems Hidden On Netflix

World Cinema is often dark and full of terrors...

Do you love horror but have run out of things to watch coming out of Hollywood or the British scene? It€™s sometimes easy to forget that there€™s a world of countries out there producing scary movies of their own, often providing a distinctly different flavour, culture or whole new kinds of scares that English-language speaking countries, by nature, just don€™t. The rise of Netflix has made it easier than ever before for people to experience films from all over the world. But you may have found yourself scrolling through the vast selection, not knowing what€™s worth watching and what€™s worth avoiding like the zombie plague. So whether you€™re into giant monster movies, slow-burning horror thrillers, supernatural ghost stories, over-the-top gore-fests or unsettling dreadfests but want to explore World Cinema for your latest horror kicks then rest assured Netflix does have plenty to offer in that department. Note: The list adheres to the US, UK, Canada and Australia regions of Netflix.

15. Tormented (2011)

Takashi Shimizu is most known for contributing one of the most famous J-horror entities to pop culture €“ the ghostly Japanese Ju-on series and Americanized Grudge remake. He also directed this very bizarre supernatural 3D horror which saw him collaborate with acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love). In basic terms it's about a young girl and her bullied younger brother who are haunted by a large rabbit doll. The gimmicky 3D aspect is very distracting when you don€™t have the option, as on Netflix, to watch in 3D; scenes of stuff literally floating out the movie screen the characters are watching are rendered inert. Nevertheless there€™s still plenty to enjoy here as it mixes the usual supernatural ghostly horror into an off-the-wall concoction of bewildering visuals and affecting family drama. Available on US Netflix
