15 French Horror Films You Won't Forget In A Hurry

2. Les Yeux Sans Visage (1960)

Les Yeux Sans Visage 1960 A Mad French surgeon and his assistant go out kidnapping girls in order to steal their faces. His daughter - Christiane - was seriously disfigured in a car accident that was his fault, and now he is trying to transplant some unfortunate women's faces onto his daughter in order to restore her appearance. Her father may be obsessed with face transplants, but Christiane has had enough and rebels against his awful tyranny. The sad and lonely Christiane (Edith Scob) floats ethereally through the movie with a disarming featureless mask upon her face. The film was received quite modestly at the time, but underwent a critical renaissance in the 1980s and is now widely regarded as one of France's most famous and iconic horror films. The movie inspired a legion of future genre directors from Jess Franco (Gritos en la Noche utilises virtually the same plot) and John Carpenter (Michael Myers has a similar featureless mask). A masterpiece every Francophile should not miss out on.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
