15 Good Horror Films That Totally Lost It By The End

The Film:

James Wan's pant-browning haunted house movie, filled with terrifying jump scares and palm-sweating tension, confirmed him as a modern master of terror and remains one of the decade's most genuinely scary films. Shame about that awful second movie though. In it, a young comatose boy is being taken over by some very frightening ghosts.

The Ending:

The film gets a bit silly towards the end. As Patrick Wilson goes into a weird spiritual place and fights a strange red demon, the film loses credibility and is nowhere near as strong as what came before. It would've been hard to match the earlier scenes, but going in such a weird direction was not the way to progress the story.

Having a jump-scare filled finale (That's what this film did so well) would've have been far better, since that would've at least been sticking to the film's strengths. It's not a total disaster of a final act, but all the critics who complained about the plot devolving in the last part had a very valid point.

Additionally, an unnecessary scene which feels like an epilogue kills off the film's most interesting character, Elise and leaves the film on a cliff-hanger; one which would be resolved very weakly in the sequel. The death of Elise was fairly pointless and made things tricky for the rest of the franchise as they had to keep finding ways to bring her back.
