15 Greatest Ending Lines In Film History
2. The Greatest Trick The Devil Ever Pulled - The Usual Suspects (1995)
“The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled, was convincing the world he didn’t exist. And like that, he’s gone.”
So ends The Usual Suspects, a twisting psychological thriller that forces some confused detectives - and the audience - to figure out who criminal mastermind Keyser Söze really is out of the possible defendants the cops have lined-up.
The movie is told through the perspective of unassuming eyewitness Verbal Kint, who tells the detectives just enough to keep them off his back. Then, in the film's final moments, it's revealed that anxious, disabled Verbal is actually the man they've been looking for. But of course it's too late.
As Verbal escapes justice, the film cuts back to an earlier speech he made about the Devil, bringing a new level of dramatic irony to his clever deception: He's the Devil, the one the cops have been looking for, and now he's gone. It's a classic reveal now, but on first viewing there are few movie twists - or quotes - that are better.
