15 Greatest Heroic Sacrifices In Comic Book Movies
14. John Constantine - Constantine
Constantine is very easily one of the least well-received of the modern canon of comic book movie adaptations, and while it's definitely not a high-point for the genre, it does have its moments. Chief among them is the interesting - if slightly controversial - take on suicide as a loop-hole to Constantine's hellish contract.
He might be nothing like the comic book version of Hellblazer that fans knew and loved (which was precisely the issue really) but Constantine's literal f*ck you to the devil is a rare moment that belongs on the page. Facing inevitable defeat, Constantine sacrifices himself (not believing he has any hope of redemption, but as a selfless act), and is forgiven of his sins as Lucifer watches his soul slip through his fingers.
It's a great end to an otherwise pretty mediocre film, but it adds a lot to it: not least the almost snarky way Lucifer heals Constantine and cures him of cancer, knowing if he gives him time on Earth he'll mess up enough to damn himself again. It's so good it almost counts as a second twist.
