Notable films: The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Army Of Darkness, Drag Me To Hell

While Tobe Hooper warranted a place on this list for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Sam Raimi has the honour of being one of only two filmmakers in history to direct a perfect horror trilogy.

Revolving around an ancient Sumerian text which unleashes the demonic forces of the underworld on a group of unsuspecting holidaymakers in a secluded cabin, the Evil Dead trilogy set the bar for anarchic, tongue-in-cheek and ultra-violent horror movies. It's a bar which few directors have managed to surpass, leading to dozens of inferior imitators.

While Raimi moved onto pastures new in terms of genre (and a less consistently impressive trilogy with Spider-Man), 2009's Drag Me To Hell proved that he still has what it takes to serve up a film which nods and winks at the audience as it effortlessly lampoons genre conventions, simultaneously making them jump out of their seat.

Sadly, the rumours that Army Of Darkness 2 is in the pipeline aren't true.
