The Last Czars is a documentary drama charting the downfall of the Romanov dynasty, the last royal family of Russia. Using a mixture of period drama and interviews with historians, the troubled reign of the last czar is brought to life.

It's a lavish recreation of royal life in Russia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that covers Nicolas II's rise to the throne through to his ultimate abdication and exile.

The intertwining story of notorious mystic and holy man Rasputin and his rise from peasant to key royal aid also makes for fascinating viewing.

It's exciting, engaging and educational and despite a few too many needless sex scenes, perhaps an attempt at capturing a post Game of Thrones audience, The Last Czars strikes the perfect balance between period drama and historical documentary.
