Netflix

Hyper Hardboiled Gourmet Report is a Japanese food documentary where roving interviewers visit the fringes of society to discover what foods different groups of people eat. Back in the studio, a reporter reacts to the footage.

As with many Japanese tv shows, it's a little bit weird and wonderful in its presentation but by capturing the eating habits of unusual people in unusual situations it provides a matter of fact insight into the world we live in.

It's an extreme show that covers some intense subjects ranging from ex-child soldiers in Liberia and feuding street gangs in Los Angeles to struggling refugees crossing the Serbian border.

For that reason, Hyper Hardboiled Gourmet Report can be an extremely tough and emotional watch but ultimately it's an engaging, enlightening and rewarding experience.
