15 Horror Movies That Actually Need Remakes

11. Urban Legend (1998)

The Original: In this admittedly original horror flick, a killer appears to be acting out numerous urban legends during his killings, yet what could have been a subversive stab at the genre is ultimately surprisingly dull, lacking in self-awareness and involving legends that too few audience members are likely to have heard of. In addition, the characters are terrible, it's just not scary, and the ending blows. Why It Needs A Remake: It's a cool idea and one which would probably be a lot more effective in the social media generation, where information is a lot more pervasive and, of course, Twitter could be used to market the film by trying to make urban legends trend (or something like that). With a smart screenplay which admits its own absurdity while boasting Scream-like meta humour, a new take on Urban Legend could shake the horror genre up. How Likely Is It?: 5/10. The film made more than five-fold its $14 million budget at the box office, though studios don't seem especially high on meta-horror at the moment after Scream 4 didn't exactly blow up the box office. Still, there's always the chance a studio will just remake the film as a horror that takes itself seriously (which is a terrible idea, of course).
