15 Horror Movies That Inspired Real-Life Crimes

13. The Loved Ones

Scream Ghostface
Paramount Pictures

Aussie director Sean Byrne’s feature film debut The Loved Ones is the story of a teen girl so scorned by her love interest’s refusal to go to prom with her that she kidnaps and tortures him with the help of her equally deranged father.

The movie was a favourite of horror fanatic Gary George – a British man who murdered his friend Andrew Nall in the latter’s flat in 2016 after stabbing him over 40 times after which he went to a nearby off-licence and confessed his crime to a shop assistant.

During the attack on Nall, George also carved into his friend’s abdomen and threw salt onto the open wound which eerily mimicked a scene from The Loved Ones in which the antagonist carves a love heart into her victim’s chest before also rubbing salt in the wound. Thankfully, after his trial was over George was sentenced to serve a minimum of 30 years in prison.
