15 Horror Movies You Really Shouldn't Watch Alone

9. Lake Mungo (2008)

Though lesser-known than every other movie on this list, Lake Mungo is an insidiously disturbing horror mockumentary that absolutely deserves your attention.

This low-budget Aussie horror focuses on the drowning death of a young woman, the attempts of her family to deal with it and the paranormal events that follow.

Directed with resourcefulness and conviction by Joel Anderson in his debut - who, depressingly, hasn't directed a film since - this is one of the most convincing faux-docs you'll ever see, benefiting tremendously from Anderson's note-perfect replication of typical documentary tropes and some fantastic performances.

Making clever use of offputting ambient music and low-fi footage, Lake Mungo smartly conceals its budgetary constraints while serving up a number of deeply upsetting moments sure to sear themselves into your brain.

There's one moment in particular that's so bracingly effective it might cause you to turn the movie off altogether. Unless you want to be left cowering underneath your duvet, do NOT watch this film late at night on your own.
