Were it not for a couple of extremely ropey distractions, The Phantom Menace would probably be universally considered a good film at the very least. Unfortunately, George Lucas decided to focus too much on Jar Jar Binks and his fellow Gungans and also decided that the Force needed a scientific explanation.
Cue the introduction of the infamous Midi-chlorians - the microscopic organisms living within all living beings that allowed them to communicate with the Force. Being gifted was no longer a magical thing, it was simply a matter of numbers, and for some reason Lucas didn't see why that would be a problem.
He also didn't see why the contradiction of the description of the Force in A New Hope was so much of a problem either, but then he never was one to bother with his own canonical rules...
