15 Huge Controversies That Rocked Star Wars

1. Han Shot First

Han Shot First Star Wars
Lucasfilm

There's one thing that is synonymous with George Lucas' meddling personality more than anything else changed in the re-releases of Star Wars, and it comes down to three little words: Han shot first.

In the original film, Han Solo shoots Greedo in Mos Eisley pre-emptively as his enemy threatens him. There was no problem with this as it suited the character and established him as a rogue who wasn't to be messed with. Also, Greedo was hardly anyone you'd shed a tear over.

Clearly, Lucas disagreed, and in 1997 he made Greedo shoot first instead (before making them closer together in both 2004 and 2011). He believed Han shouldn't have shot first, in contrast to pretty much every fan in the entire world, who believed heroes could be sh*tbags when it was necessary.

No matter how much Lucas claims it was always his intention to have Greedo shoot first, it's never going to be accepted.
