John Hughes' classic 1980s comedy ends with Simple Minds' classic Don't You (Forget About Me) playing out as the five members of the so-called Breakfast Club leave detention to head home. The jock hooks up with the weirdo, the criminal hooks up with the princess, and we discover the contents of the essay written to assistant principal Vernon, a rejection of his request for them to write about who they are, on the basis that he's already made up his mind, boxing them into easy stereotypes. We picture Judd Nelson's John Bender walking across the football field and pumping his fist into the air as the image freezes and the lyrics, "don't you forget about me" play out, reminding us of the possibility that these characters could simply go back to ignoring each other when they're back at school. A brilliantly statuesque, triumphant image on which to end one of the smartest and most thought-provoking teen movies of the 1980s.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
