In 2000's film Cast Away, veteran actor Tom Hanks portrayed Chuck Noland, a FedEx worker who finds himself surviving a plane crash over the ocean. He spends the next four years trying to survive-- or not-- on his small island home, figuring out a way to get back home. The guy endures well over a thousand days worth of isolation and hell with only a blood-splattered volleyball joining him for companionship. And to come home to what? His woman married off to someone else. It's enough to lead to such severe depression one might consider doing something self-injurious like making Larry Crowne. For the role, Hanks lost a whopping 55 pounds to portray Noland at the end of his journey. He also sported a pretty bad-ass beard.
